On average, people eat an estimated 193 pounds of genetically engineered food in a 12-month period. The government isn’t doing this kind of research and is not requiring it of the food industry. Other foods that commonly come in genetically engineered versions – but are not included in EWG’s calculations – are canola oil, cottonseed oil, papaya, yellow squash and soy products other than soybean oil. Here’s another good reason: Americans are eating their body weight in genetically engineered food every year – and have little idea where it’s coming from.
