To every individual practitioner, or those who have interest inthe Dharma, it is very important right from the beginning to checkand watch one’s own mind. This is the first and foremost step inthe progressive stages of Dharma practice, like learning the basiccourse of any language. We start with the alphabet, whether it’sEnglish or Hindi or whatever. That too should then follow asystematic course of discipline. It’s the same for every form ofstudy right from the beginning. Thereafter one moves onprogressively to higher and further practices and studies. Afterhaving completed the basic courses one then proceeds on to more andbroader learning and practices.
Then again, one should always keep the mind and body in arelaxed and peaceful way. The pacification of mind is importantbecause we all live in a busy and crowded society. We all tend tohave somewhat distracted minds full of various conceptual thoughtsand perceptions. This makes it difficult for us to recognize theinherent true nature of the mind and so we become unable todifferentiate the conceptual thoughts and the true nature of themind. Thus we can not control our conceptual thinking nor lessenthe passions and our negative thoughts.
一旦我们通过平伏自心而止息错误的概念性思维,我们就会认知到心性,所有修持由此而趋进正确之道。
Once we have subdued wrong conceptual thinking by pacifying themind then we will recognize the nature of the mind. Every practicethen becomes right.
As was said before, we should always judge ourselves more thanwe should judge other. The true improvement of one’s practice andconduct will be through checking for one’s own defects, faults andshort comings.
It is very usual that most individuals have the habit of judgingothers rather than judging one’s own mind andactions. This is actually wrongand won’t help us to progress. So, in brief always judge yourselfand your mind as this will improve your practice and you will alsobe able to recognize the true nature of your mind as well as be ofhelp to others
So after subduing the mind and making the mind stable then this iscalled Shiney or Calm Abiding (Samatha) and with this practice ofShiney you should do the practice of counting the inhalation andexhalation of the breath..
